Not eating animals or their products leaves educational and physical benefits

Apr 2019 — Various studies show that eating varied plant-based diets, exercising and having a purpose in life increase life expectancy, brain volume and positive moods – whether utilized throughout life or merely later.

Metabolic rate, or how fast one converts food into energy, depends more on muscle mass and how rigid one’s cell membranes are than on age or family history. Exercise increases muscle mass, and not eating animals creates healthier cell membranes. The saturated fat from animals or their products makes membranes more rigid, preventing insulin receptors in the cell from working properly and slowing down food absorption, according to Dr. Hana Kahleova. Prebiotics in plants increase the absorption by allowing good bacteria to grow in one’s gut.

Eating animals and their products increases the risk of death, cancer, obesity, dementia, diabetes, high cholesterol, circulatory and respiratory diseases. According to Dr Asha Subramanian, meat and dairy processing exposes food to carcinogens while hormones and fats in the products are passed onto the people who digest them, causing young girls to reach puberty earlier, obese teens to more likely die in middle age, and even young adults to think less clearly.

Plant-based diets tend to reduce the risks significantly, maintain metabolism rates, and provide the needed fiber to move toxins quickly through the intestine. They help men gain 10 more pleasant years; women, six. Two servings of grain and at least seven servings of fruits and vegetables daily increase one’s brain volume, Subramanian said. The diets may also decrease mood disorders because plants lack arachidonic acid, according to Dr Michael Greger.

Subramanian suggests that mothers begin modeling healthy eating while pregnant since whatever they eat passes to their babies via the amniotic fluid. After the births she recommends presenting each new plant food 20 times and continuing to model healthy eating.

Plant-based meals will be offered on the menus of New York City’s public schools and all hospitals in the state because of the persistence of vegetarian activists. Will other government bodies follow suit?
