Vegetarians compromise for the holidays

Nov 2018 — We don’t have to cave in for the holidays if we take these precautions:

  1. Exercise on the road when traveling
  2. Pre-eat vegetarian food to balance what the host will offer
  3. Carry purse snacks
  4. Stay hydrated
  5. Be flexible
  6. Schedule time for self-care
  7. Inform the hostess in advance of your dietary restrictions, including animal broth. Encourage whatever efforts are made. Offer to help with the dishes so you can bring/prepare some vegetarian dishes.
  8. As a host, add more fat, plant-based of course, to enhance the flavor of dishes for nonvegetarian guests.
  9. Be low-key with answers about your being vegetarian. Focus on your health plusses, not what you give up. Admit if you don’t have an answer. Avoid proselytizing.
  10. Handle your craving for animal foods you used to eat by adding the seasonings you used in the past or by using imitation flavors.
